Position Summary

Outdoor Dreams is seeking an experienced residential outdoor living designer who can independently develop complete design concepts—pools, patios, structures, and landscaping—from client requirements, site measurements, photographs, and project budgets.

This is not a training role. You should be ready to contribute immediately, needing only an introduction to our company standards and workflow. You will take projects from the initial brief through concept presentation and revisions, modeling them accurately in Revit and coordinating with our construction team and in-house Lumion specialist.

Who We Are

Outdoor Dreams helps homeowners improve how they use, enjoy, and care for their homes.

Outdoor Dreams is a team of craftsmen, designers, and construction professionals specializing in luxury pools, pool houses, outdoor living spaces, and other residential structures. We serve select homeowners throughout Virginia and are known for managing complex projects that incorporate multiple outdoor elements and amenities.

We are committed to hiring exceptional people who align with our core values:

  • Care: We treat every client's home, investment, family, and experience with the seriousness and respect they deserve.
  • Grace and Forgiveness: We address mistakes and disagreements with empathy, accountability, and a commitment to reconciliation and improvement.
  • Learning and Growth: We remain teachable, continually improve our craft, and invest in the development of others.
  • Thoughtfulness: We take the time to think critically about our projects, decisions, and responsibilities.
  • Data-Driven Accountability: We make decisions based on accurate information, understand our numbers, and remain accountable for results.
  • Clear Communication: We communicate completely, concisely, professionally, and on time with clients, partners, and teammates.

What You'll Do

  • Turn a client's wish list, site information, and budget into a cohesive concept—without being handed a predetermined layout.
  • Plan for circulation, furniture placement, usable space, proportions, sightlines, privacy, and the relationship between the house and outdoor areas.
  • Prioritize competing requests, recognize when everything will not fit, and propose thoughtful alternatives.
  • Build accurate, organized Revit models of pools, patios, pool houses, cabanas, retaining walls, steps, and terrain.
  • Produce clear, dimensioned plans, elevations, and sections for client review, estimating, and construction coordination.
  • Design gunite and fiberglass pools, integrating spas, tanning ledges, steps, benches, coping, automatic covers, decking, and equipment locations.
  • Integrate pool houses, cabanas, pavilions, and porches that complement the home's architecture.
  • Design for slopes, elevation changes, and site constraints, incorporating preliminary grading and drainage concepts.
  • Develop landscape plans with plants selected for site conditions and shown at realistic sizes.
  • Lay out outdoor lighting and specialty features such as fireplaces, fire pits, water features, and outdoor kitchens, and communicate the lighting concept clearly to our Lumion specialist.
  • Work within budget and suggest simplifications or phased approaches that preserve the client’s highest priorities.
  • Flag missing information, design conflicts, and items requiring engineering or construction review.

How Success Is Measured

Success in this role is measured by your ability to receive a project brief and deliver a cohesive, buildable concept with minimal supervision. Accurate site interpretation, sound construction and budget judgment, organized and editable Revit models, efficient revisions, and proactive communication all matter, but they serve a single outcome: designs our clients love and our construction team can build.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • 3–5+ years of direct experience designing residential outdoor living projects with pools, patios, structures, and landscaping.
  • A portfolio demonstrating personal responsibility for layout, design decisions, and problem-solving, including built projects (ideally with completed-project photographs).
  • Strong, hands-on Revit proficiency, including working within company templates, families, and modeling standards with little to no training.
  • Working knowledge of gunite and fiberglass pools, including manufacturer-specific fiberglass models and dimensions.
  • Experience designing pool houses, cabanas, and covered structures, including footprints, roof forms, ceiling heights, posts, and utility needs.
  • A practical understanding of construction methods, materials, retaining walls, drainage, grading, and site access.
  • Residential landscape design knowledge, including mature size, spacing, layering, screening, seasonality, and maintenance.
  • An understanding of how grading, structures, materials, and hardscaping affect cost and complexity.
  • Strong written English and comfort working in feet and inches with U.S. project standards, setbacks, and easements.
  • Reliable turnaround times and an agreed daily working-hour overlap with our team.

Preferred

  • Lumion experience (a bonus, as we already have strong Lumion capabilities in-house).
  • Familiarity with Zone 7 planting, or the ability to quickly learn and consistently use our preferred plant list.
  • Experience designing outdoor lighting, fireplaces, fire pits, water features, and outdoor kitchens.

Attributes That Fit This Role

A successful designer in this role already has the core design, Revit, and practical construction knowledge the work requires. They ask focused questions, explain their design decisions, flag conflicts early rather than making unsupported assumptions, and incorporate feedback accurately. Most importantly, they create outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and buildable.

Tools, Equipment, and Setup

Software: All required software licenses are provided.

Hardware: You will need your own computer capable of running Revit and related design tools. A hardware reimbursement will be provided after six months of employment.

Connectivity: A stable, reliable internet connection is required, since you will be collaborating live with our US-based team.

Confidentiality: All designs, models, client information, and work product created in this role are the property of Outdoor Dreams and are handled confidentially.

Why Join Outdoor Dreams?

Ditch the Timesheet

We are a results-based team. We do not track your hours or ask you to log time — we care that the work is complete, accurate, and on schedule. We do ask for a consistent daily overlap with our US team so collaboration is easy for everyone.

Our projects make a real impact on how our clients use and enjoy their homes through the integration of the outdoors. We believe outdoor living spaces are an essential part of home life, helping us connect with nature and each other through the unique memories that can only be made outside.
