Cost Estimator

Job Description:
Under the general direction of the Sales Manager, the Cost Estimator is responsible for reviewing and preparing cost estimates for sales opportunities. This includes preparing materials, labor, and equipment cost estimations for construction projects, analyzing proposals, and collaborating with the sales team to ensure timely responses to customers and bid opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of full cost estimates for conceptual, design-build, or general tenders.
  • Prepare materials, labor, and equipment cost estimations to carry out construction projects according to proposals, plans, estimates, and specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain a list of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Advise on proposal procedures to follow.
  • Study and analyze proposals received.
  • Establish unit costs, labor rates, productivity factors, and location impacts.
  • Evaluate and recommend allowances for indirect costs, design unknowns, escalation, and contingency.
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of the estimate.
  • Prepare estimates by calculating the complete takeoff of the scope of work.
  • Maintain files of working documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current, accurate information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.
  • Work together with the sales team to ensure that customer inquiries and bid opportunities are responded to in a timely manner.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a construction/engineering program, or a related field.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 3-6 years of experience in cost estimation.
  • Ability to read and interpret building specifications, blueprints, and as-builts.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills necessary for material and labor estimates.
  • Ability to use cost-estimating software to prepare cost quotes and bids.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Time management skills.
  • Client service and public interaction skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborative approach in dealing with customers and fellow employees.

Additional Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in calculations.
  • Proactive in resolving issues and challenges related to cost estimation.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and current market trends.
  • Experience with systems like Microsoft Office and ZOHO are desired.

Work Environment:

  • Work is based on Eastern Standard Time (EST).
  • This is a home-office position.
  • You must have your own PC or laptop for this role.
